Svensk Flyghistorisk Förening – About SFF

Svensk Flyghistorisk Förening

The Swedish Aviation Historical Society (SFF) was founded on 8 January 1961 and is the natural meeting place for everyone interested in aviation history in Sweden — from general aviation enthusiasts to dedicated aviation historians and researchers.

The purpose of the association is to support and promote aviation historical research in Sweden. This includes collecting, preserving, and maintaining valuable artifacts, literature, and documents relating to Swedish civil and military aviation, as well as documenting both aircraft and the people who shaped Swedish aviation history. The association is engaged in the full breadth of Swedish aviation history, from the pioneering era to the present day, and actively cooperates with other organizations with similar interests.

Publications

The magazine Svensk Flyghistoria (“Swedish Aviation History”) is published by the association five times per year — including one double issue — and is one of Sweden’s most comprehensive magazines in its field, featuring articles, research, and personal histories covering both civil and military aviation. The magazine is available for purchase by anyone, but is also included in the membership fee.

The association also publishes Flyghistorisk Revy, a book series on Swedish aviation history that is released virtually every year. In years when a new volume in the series is published, it is included in the membership fee.

Archives and Media Collections

The association’s library archive contains more than 5,000 titles as well as an extensive collection of newspaper clippings — an invaluable resource for researchers, authors, and journalists. As a member, you also gain access to a unique digitized media archive containing more than 260,000 historical photographs, an audio archive, and a film archive currently under development.

Support for Aviation History Projects

Each year, SFF provides financial support to aviation history projects throughout Sweden — including research, aircraft preservation, preservation of historical material, documentation, and public activities such as exhibitions and model aircraft competitions. Museums and private collections open to the public may also apply for grants.

Awards

SFF administers the Söderberg Plaque, Sweden’s most prestigious aviation history award, as well as the Barkarby Prize — the association’s perpetual award for the best-restored aircraft with a connection to Swedish aviation history during the previous year. The association also presents other awards recognizing contributions to Swedish aviation history.

Activities Throughout Sweden

The association has regional branches across the country, from Skåne in the south to Norrbotten in the north, where regular meetings, lectures, and activities are held. As a member, you are welcome to participate in activities organized by any branch, regardless of where you live.

Please Note – The Association Operates in Swedish

SFF is a Swedish-language organization. Our magazine, archives, and website are all in Swedish, and membership assumes that members are able to read Swedish.
